High-temperature resistant polyethylene (PE-RT), a copolymer of ethylene with alpha-olefins 1-propene, 1-butene, 1-hexene, or 1-octene, forms a unique molecular structure. In addition to high resistance to internal pressure under ambient conditions and high temperatures, PE-RT pipes also exhibit flexibility and favorable chemical and mechanical properties. Therefore, PE-RT products are used in 3-layer and 5-layer pipes for drinking water, under pressure for cold and hot water, heating and floor cooling.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keywords: polyethylene, PE-RT.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduction<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New materials and processes for pipe manufacturing continue to evolve, with the use of PE-RT gaining attention due to improved processability and long-term strength at elevated temperatures. In locations where larger pipe sizes are required in addition to heat applications, industrial system designers have recommended PE-RT pipes. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The compatibility and ability to use PE-RT at high temperatures without the need for crosslinking makes it a suitable choice for a wide range of applications. PE-RT is a polyethylene copolymer containing ethene, octene, butene or hexane that can be easily used in cold and hot water transfers.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, PE-RT, with its excellent physical properties, resistance to erosion and impact, as well as easy fabrication and installation, can replace atactic polypropylene copolymer (PPR), polybutene (PB), chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (PVC-C) and cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) for use in application areas such as heat exchangers, underfloor heating pipes and hot and cold water transmission. PE-RT is designed with a bimodal molecular weight distribution resin. Figure (1) shows the molecular weight distribution curve of PE-RT.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/behinpolymerco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pert-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 1. Single-peak and twin-peak distribution of PE-RT resin. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lamellar crystalline structures are connected to the amorphous part of the polymer via Tie chains. The probability of forming Tie chains increases with the length of the polymer chain. Tie chain molecules enhance properties such as toughness, long-term creep, and ESCR by connecting the crystalline parts of the polymer together. As shown in Figure 2, Tie chains have high mobility and expansion, so they can easily release the absorbed energy.   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/behinpolymerco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pert-2-.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 2. Molecular structure of PE-RT pipes <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PE-RT contains a large number of high molecular weight chains compared to polyethylene. Long-term strength, toughness, ductility and fatigue resistance all improve with increasing molecular weight. However, higher molecular weight makes the resin more difficult to process. Bimodal technology increases the number of high molecular weight chains with improved extrusion processability.   <br\/>Figure 3 shows that the fracture strength and toughness increase with increasing short chain branch length. The type of comonomer affects the concentration of the Tie chain and ultimately the performance of the final product. 1-Octen is more efficient than shorter olefins.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/behinpolymerco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pert-3.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 3. Effect of Tie chains on polymer toughness <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the international standard ISO22391-2 for PE-RT pipes, PE-RT materials are divided into two types I and II, of which the second type shows greater resistance to high temperature and pressure.<br\/>There are two main methods for producing PE-RT, namely solution polymerization developed by Dow Chemical and slurry polymerization developed by Basell. Although PE-RT materials can be produced by various processes, differences in the type, amount and distribution of comonomer, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the copolymer can cause differences in molecular structure, and its performance. However, few studies have been conducted on PE-RT materials.  <br\/>Therefore, with the aim of investigating how the types of comonomers, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution affect the molecular structure, the properties of three types of PE-RT have been investigated in a study.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) PERT (Type II) containing a copolymer of ethylene and 1-butene with a melt index of 0.14 g.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) PERT (Type I) containing a copolymer of ethylene and 1-octene with a melt index of 0.7 g.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3) PERT (Type II) containing a copolymer of ethylene and 1-octene with a melt index of 0.55 g.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Table 1. SSA is a temperature-dependent separation process in which crystallizable segments of different lengths are placed in the melt. The longer the chain, the thicker lamellae are formed at high temperatures. As can be seen in Figure 4, eight melting peaks were obtained for the three samples, with the temperature increasing from peak 1 to 8 (Figure 4),   <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/behinpolymerco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pert-4.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 4 Melting diagram using the SSA method<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several peaks in each curve, indicating that the comonomer is not uniformly distributed on the molecular chain. The curves of PE-RT-2 and 3-PE-RT are similar in shape, but the main melting peak in 3-PE-RT is slightly shifted to a higher temperature. 1-PE-RT has one more peak at \u2218C 133. The peak fitting result shows that 1-PE-RT has more regular molecular chains and thicker lamellae than 3-PE-RT. 3-PE-RT has thicker lamellae and a lower content of thinner lamellae than 2-PE-RT.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mechanical properties and crystallization kinetics of the three samples were investigated. 1-PE-RT and 3-PE-RT, which are both type 2 but made with different comonomers, differ in many performance aspects mainly due to the different comonomer distribution. 1-PE-RT has better crystallization and higher flexural modulus and yield strength than 3-PE-RT. Most of the comonomers of 1-PE-RT are uniformly distributed on the molecular chain, forming a larger amount of the Tie chain, while a small portion of the comonomer is not uniformly distributed in the short-chain molecules, which gives it better crystallization ability. As a result, 1-PE-RT has a higher modulus and better long-term performance. Although 3-PE-RT is slightly better than 1-PE-RT, it cannot have the stiffness and long-term performance as good as 1-PE-RT.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to 3-PE-RT with the same comonomer, 2-PE-RT has poorer crystallinity, lower flexural modulus, and lower yield strength, indicating that the ESCR of PE-RT-2 is better than that of sample 3.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PE-RT pipe features<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PE-RT is a copolymer of ethylene with an alpha-olefin (ethene, octene, hexane or butene), which, by adjusting the comonomer distribution, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution, has high resistance to impact, light, temperature and pressure in hot and cold water pipe systems.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. PE-RT pipe is resistant to UV light and oxygen.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. PE-RT pipe has thermal stability and can withstand long-term pressure. Under the temperature of 70 degrees Celsius and the pressure of 0.4 MPa, the pipe can be used for more than 50 years. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. PE-RT pipe has high flexibility, which makes it economical. The bending radius of PE-RT pipe is small (Rn=5D) and it does not return back after bending, making it ideal for use in construction, as the stress on the bending parts is reduced. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. PE-RT pipe is impact resistant and its breaking temperature is at low temperature (-70 degrees Celsius), so that PE-RT pipe can be transported and used at low temperatures and does not require heat to bend.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Figure 5 shows that PE-RT pipe is more than 20 times more resistant to crack growth compared to PE4710.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/behinpolymerco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/elementor\/thumbs\/pert-5--qbnz085yilnuf6mtqsjqb43g80kj5vlw77424e2qa4.png\" alt=\"pert-5-\" title=\"pert-5-\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 5. Resistance to slow crack growth (ASTM F1473). <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5. Heat fusion connection can be used for PE-RT pipe to make the product easy to install and repair. In the underfloor heating piping system, if the system is damaged by external force, the PE-RT pipe can be repaired by heat fusion, which is more convenient, faster and safer.<br\/>6. PE-RT pipe can be produced without cross-linking process. PE-RT pipe is easy to process and has uniform wall thickness.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why choose PE-RT pipe?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PE-RT pipes can transport high-temperature water between different locations. The characteristics of the pipes include:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Lightweight and easy to transport<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Flow capacity is 30% higher than metal pipe<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 Eco-friendly and recyclable<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 No toxic auxiliary materials are used in the production of the pipe.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> \u2022 It is flexible and requires fewer joints. PE-RT is flexible enough to bend at the angles required by heating and cooling systems. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2022 High resistance to crack growth<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/behinpolymerco.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/pert-6-300x257.png\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Figure 6.
