1. Environmental impacts<\/h2>\n
One of the main concerns about plastic pollution is its entry into marine environments through improper waste disposal practices. Despite international recognition of plastics as a pollutant and the implementation of legislation to reduce plastic waste in marine ecosystems, significant challenges remain to address this issue. The environmental consequences of microplastics include injury and death to marine organisms, such as birds, mammals, fish, and reptiles, due to entanglement and ingestion. <\/p>\n Microplastics are defined as plastic particles less than 5 mm in length. These particles can come from two main sources: (1) small plastic beads used as exfoliants in cosmetic products and (2) fragments that form from the breakdown of larger plastics. The presence of microplastics in marine environments was first documented in the 1970s; however, recent studies have shown their widespread distribution and abundance in marine ecosystems, posing significant risks to marine life. <\/p>\n From 1950 to 2015, approximately 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste were produced, a significant portion (about 4.9 billion tons) of which was released into the environment. Projections indicate that this production rate may increase to 12 billion tons by 2050. Despite this alarming trend, microplastic pollution has still largely gone unnoticed by policymakers and regulatory bodies. Various organizations are actively promoting measures to encourage recycling and reuse of plastics. <\/p>\n One promising strategy for reducing plastic pollution involves the use of microorganisms that are capable of degrading synthetic polymers called microplastics. Many fungi and bacteria have shown the ability to biodegrade chemicals such as polystyrene, polyurethane, and polyethylene. These microorganisms could be introduced into wastewater treatment systems and other contaminated environments to effectively reduce microplastic pollution. <\/p>\n Given the global threat posed by plastic pollution, particularly microplastics, it is essential that coordinated global efforts are made to improve waste management practices and promote sustainable options to preserve marine ecosystems and public health for future generations.<\/p>\n References:<\/strong><\/p>\n [1] Rogers, K.
